20th Century British Lead Crystal Large Lead Crystal Rose or Flower Bowl
For a full product description, see below.
This is a highly attractive example of a lead crystal flower or rose bowl, British in origin and probably attributable to Royal Doulton or Royal Brierley.
The bowl is made from thick lead crystal, with a flattened rounded body that tapers in and then widens out to merge with the solid foot. The latter is star cut and unmarked.
The bowl is cut just below the rim with a band of overlapping oval cuts, that give the appearance of notches. The centre of the body is cut with two rows of interlocking criss-crosses, that form a lattice. On the uppermost row, the centre of each cross is surmounted by a three-pointed fan. Where adjacent crosses meet, there is a small vertical wedge cut. The diamond-shaped panels formed within the lattice are overcut with smaller cross cuts. Below the lattice, alternate diamond-shaped panels terminate with a vertical wedge cut or an inverted V cut.
It has a height of approximately 9.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 14.9cm and across the foot of about 10.7cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a smooth notch on the inside of the rim where the polishing wheel must have slipped during manufacture. This is not noticeable visibly, only when you run your fingers around the inside of the bowl. Although it is only a manufacturing flaw, I mention it for the sake of completion.
