Product Description

This is a highly attractive and unusual straining jug by Price Sons & Co. and dating to latter part of the 19th century.

The jug has been crudely made, with a tapering cylindrical body. The spout has been drawn out from the rim; on the interior of the spout, a piece of pottery has been roughly attached and pierced, to allow for straining of the liquid contents as it is poured. At 90° to this the small looped handle has been applied jug below the rim. Below the lower attachment it is stamped with an oval containing the words ‘PRICE BRISTOL’. There is a circumferential band of moulded circles in the upper half. The interior has a clear glaze, and the exterior is glazed in brown.

The underside is unglazed, revealing the underlying ceramic body to be stoneware.

It has a maximum height of approximately 8.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 11.2cm and across the base of about 9.1cm.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although as previously mentioned it has been very crudely made. This means that the glaze is patchy in places, and there are notches and lumps within the body. These flaws are from the manufacturing process and add charm to such a utilitarian piece.
