This is a stunning and highly unusual example of a decanter set, probably Bohemian in origin and dating to about 1830.

The cordial decanter is of classic form, with a broad flattened rim and cylindrical neck. This then widens out to form a broad ring at the shoulder; it merges with the cylindrical body. The base is thickened with a central kick and rough pontil mark. The decanter rim, shoulder, and base are all decorated with a band of red. There is a central stylised grapevine motif on the body.

The stopper is of classic solid discoid form, tapering in to form waisted portion and a short, ground peg. There is a band of red above the peg and a five-leaved motif on the top of the stopper.

Each glass has a rounded bowl, which tapers in at the base to merge with the roughly cylindrical stem. The latter has a central discoid knop. The foot is domed with a central rough pontil. Each glass has a band of red around the rim, knop, and two concentric rings on the foot. The bowl is decorated with the same grapevine motif as the decanter. There are five glasses in total.

The tray is flat with an everted rim. The latter is decorated with a band of red; there are two concentric bands of red on the base of the tray. The rim is decorated with a repeating vine motif, which is repeated in the centre with a single sprig.

This red stain was developed by Friedrich Egermann in the 1830s.

The decanter has a height of approximately 17.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 3.2cm and across the base of about 4.5cm. Each glass has a height of approximately 7.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 3.4cm and across the foot of about 3.5cm. There are minor discrepancies in the dimensions due to the handmade nature of the glasses. The tray has a diameter across the rim of about 18.5cm.

It is in excellent condition for its age. The decanter and four of the glasses in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There are some striations, bubbles, and inclusions in the glass which are to be expected from pieces of this age. None of the glasses are straight and some of them wobble when on a flat surface. One glass has two chips to the foot and a chip to the rim. The tray has two chips to the edge of the rim. This wear is to be expected from such pieces and it is astonishing that such a set has survived together for almost 200 years.
