1950s Lancaster & Sandland Ltd ‘Sandland Ware’ Cake Plate with Rose Design
For a full product description, see below.
This is a highly attractive vintage cake plate by the Stoke-on-Trent based pottery company Lancaster & Sandland Ltd.
The plate has a slightly everted, undulating gilded rim that steps down at the central circular ring. The plate is glazed in an off-white shade, over which has been transfer-printed a stylised rose pattern with smaller white flowers and foliage. There is a central gold-coloured fitting that is stepped at the junction with the plate. Above this it is cylindrical in shape and merges with the inverse teardrop-shaped handle.
The underside is marked in green with the words ‘SANDLAND WARE STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND’. The company was originally called ‘Lancaster & Sons Ltd’ but was renamed ‘Lancaster & Sandland Ltd’ in 1944. The company went in to voluntary liquidation in late 1968.
The plate has a maximum height to the top of the handle of about 13.4cm and a width across the centre of the plate of about 19.5cm.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is visible crazing to the glaze.
