1930s Wedgwood & Co. Ltd Orange Leaf Patterned Lidded Tureen

This is a pretty Art Deco example of a lidded tureen by Wedgwood & Co. Ltd of Tunstall.

The tureen has a rounded body and a wide, flattened rim. The rim is drawn out to form two handles with a moulded scroll design. The rim is decorated with three bands – an outer silver, a central orange (which continues over the scroll pattern) and an inner silver ring. Below this is a band of stylised orange leaves alternating with a black and orange geometric pattern. Directly above each geometric design is a small orange spot; adjacent spots are connected by an arc of small black dots. The space between the leaf pattern and the arcs is filled with pale yellow. The remainder of the bowl is plain.

The lid is slightly domed with a central scrolled knop. It is decorated around the edge in the same manner as the base. The knop has a central silver dot at the apex and the edge is decorated with orange. Around the point of attachment there is a silver circle.

The underside is marked in the centre with the triangular logo in yellow containing the stylised unicorn head in green and the words ‘WEDGWOOD & CO. LTD ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from around the mid-1930s.

The tureen has a maximum height (including the lid) of approximately 13.5cm and a maximum width from handle to handle of about 25.7cm

It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some crazing to the glaze and a few scratches commensurate with use.
