1930s Japanese Export Ceramic Basket Weave Design Biscuit Barrel
For a full product description, see below.
This is a charming novelty piece, made in Japan for export to the European market and probably dating to the 1930s.
This storage container, which could be used for either biscuits or sweets, is moulded to resemble a lidded basket and has a raised moulded stylised floral design.
The body is approximately oval in section, with the upper part at the sides being ‘pinched in’ where the knobs are joined for the attachment of the cane handle. This is original. The lid is also approximately oval, with notches at either end to allow the handle to move freely. It is decorated along the edge in lime green glaze and has a central oval depression, which has a moulded bar to allow easy removal of the lid.
The underside of the lid has a raised ridge, which is unglazed on its outer surface and fits securely into the body.
The base has an unglazed rim, revealing the underlying ceramic body to be an off-white colour. Within this the base is glazed in the same overall honey colour of the sides. There is a transfer print in black, consisting of the word ‘FOREIGN’ in a rectangular border, and the word ‘JAPAN’ moulded in relief.
It has a height to the top of the lid of approximately 12.5cm. The base has a length of about 14.5cm and a width of about 11.0cm.
It is in excellent condition considering it’s age, although the unglazed inner surface of the rim of the basket has a small chip, which would appear to have occurred very early on in its life. This is, of course, not visible when the lid is in place but this wear is reflected in the price.
