1920s-30s Star and Wedge Cut Lead Crystal Water Jug
This is a nice example of an early 20th century water jug, probably Czechoslovakian in origin.
This is a nice example of an early 20th century water jug, probably Czechoslovakian in origin.
The jug has a rounded lower portion, tapering in towards the everted rim. The latter is notched with a small pouring spout. The body is cut below the rim with a band of large cross cuts, the upper and lower limbs of which come in to close approximation. In the diamond shaped panels formed between adjacent crosses there is a vertical wedge cut that is overcut with three smaller wedge cuts to give an eight-pointed star. At the point at which the lower limbs of adjacent crosses meet there is a long vertical wedge cut that extends down towards the base. Between the bases of adjacent wedge cuts there is a band of five small vertical wedge cuts. The body sits on a thickened discoid base that is star cut and unmarked.
It has a height of approximately 15.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.7cm and across the base of about 10.4cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there may be the odd wear and tear scratch to the body and base, commensurate with the age of the piece.
